Making Tax Digital, without the headache.
If your income is over £50,000, HMRC now wants digital records and quarterly updates. We take care of it for £65 every three months.
What changed
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax changes how sole traders and landlords report to HMRC. Instead of one return a year, you keep digital records and send HMRC an update every quarter using compatible software, then confirm everything in a final declaration after the tax year ends. The final declaration takes the place of the usual Self Assessment return.
Does it apply to you?
| Qualifying income | You must join from |
|---|---|
| Over £50,000 | 6 April 2026 |
| Over £30,000 | 6 April 2027 |
| Over £20,000 | 6 April 2028 |
Qualifying income is your gross self-employment and property income before expenses — not your profit. HMRC decides using an earlier tax return, so you may be told in writing before your start date. Limited companies aren't covered by MTD for Income Tax.
Quarterly update dates
| Quarter | Update due |
|---|---|
| 6 April – 5 July | 7 August |
| 6 July – 5 October | 7 November |
| 6 October – 5 January | 7 February |
| 6 January – 5 April | 7 May |
Those are the standard quarters. HMRC also lets you choose calendar-quarter dates. The final declaration for the year is due by 31 January after the tax year ends. HMRC uses a points-based penalty system for late updates.

Common questions
How do I know if my income is over the limit?
Add up everything your business was paid in a tax year, before any expenses. If that's over £50,000 you're in from April 2026; over £30,000 from April 2027; over £20,000 from April 2028. If you're close to a limit, message us and we'll check.
Do I still file a Self Assessment return?
Under MTD you send a final declaration by 31 January after the tax year, which replaces the usual return. We handle both the quarterly updates and the final declaration.
Is this for limited companies?
No — MTD for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords. Limited companies pay Corporation Tax instead.
Can I just use a spreadsheet?
Spreadsheets can be part of a compliant set-up but need bridging software to send updates to HMRC. We'll set up whatever is simplest for you.
